Set Theory in Spring 2003

Advanced Set Theory

This course (Advanced Set Theory) will be lectured in English in the Autumn Term of 2003.

NOTE: I will return to work on Tuesday, November 11th, and resume my lectures. I apologize for the several cancellations.

Course status:
Advanced undergraduate to graduate level course, worth 5 credits, intended for students specializing in mathematical logic.
Lectures in autumn 2003:
Lectured by Dr. Taneli Huuskonen.
Timetable: Mo 10-12 and Tu 10-12 in SII. Lecture hall SII is located at the Dept. of Mathematics (Yliopistonkatu 5) on the 4th floor. The course starts on Monday, September 15, 2003.
Exercises: The exercise class will be held on Wednesday at 10-12 in SII, starting on September 24, 2003. List of the exercises
Contents:
The course will introduce various ideas connected with set-theoretical independence results, including the constructible hierarchy, large cardinals, and forcing.
Examinations:
To pass the course, a student has to take a final exam, which will take place in December. The exact date and place will be announced later. A second examination will be arranged for students not passing the first one.

The course is based on the book K. Kunen: Set Theory - An Introduction to Independence Proofs (Elsevier Science B.V. 1980)
