GeneralThe Department of Mathematics at the University of Helsinki was founded in 1937, and it is located in the downtown area of Helsinki, close to the Senate Square and the University Main Building. The Department has approximately 40 teachers, 15 research staff and 6 office and library staff. Some 200 new undergraduate students majoring in mathematics start each year, part of whom stop at the BSc level. Annually nearly 50 MSc degrees with a major in mathematics are completed. Some 30 graduate students are currently in the PhLic and PhD programs. Annually about 3-6 PhLic degrees and about 4 PhD degrees are completed.More detailed information about the department and its activities can be found in the 2002 annual report (PDF) of the department. ResearchThe Department of Mathematics provides good research facilities including the best mathematical library in the country. The Department represents high level of expertise covering many branches of mathematics including analysis (real, complex and functional analysis, and mathematical physics), algebra, applied mathematics, mathematical logic, stochastics, transformation groups and topology. Many research groups have received high international recognition, see, e.g., the page of Geometric Analysis and Mathematical Physics, a centre of excellence. The department is involved in publishing Annales Academiæ Scientiarum Fennicæ Mathematica, and it also has own report series.
The Department of Mathematics is also committed to high quality research and postgraduate training across the subjects of its research groups. The department runs the Graduate School in Mathematical Analysis and its applications and takes part into Graduate School in Mathematical Logic (MALJA) and The Finnish Graduate School in Stochastics. Furthermore, the department has a close cooperation with the Rolf Nevanlinna Institute which pursues research especially in applied mathematics. More information about research and research related links at the Department of Mathematics are available on the Departmental Research Page. TeachingThe Department of Mathematics offers several studying opportunities in English. Some courses in mathematics are also taught in Swedish. Ultimate information on undergraduate teaching can be found on the Finnish homepage. The department also gives postgraduate teaching, e.g., it takes part in the graduate schools of Mathematical Analysis and Logic and Stochastics.Address
