5. Travel information

5.1 Passport and visas

As a rule, foreign nationals coming to Finland should have a valid passport. For nationals of some European countries, an official identity card may be used instead. Citizens of most European countries and several other countries are not required to have a visa to enter Finland for a short stay such as 30 days. If you do not have exact information on this, please check at the nearest consular office of Finland. If you need a visa, please apply at a Finnish consular office well in advance.

If you have problems in obtaining a visa in due time, please contact us, preferably by fax or e-mail, providing us with the following information: your name, nationality, address and date of birth, passport number, date and place of your visa application, and a short explanation of the situation. We will then do all we can to resolve your problem.

5.2 Currency exchange

You can exchange Finnish marks in many places, for instance, at the airport or at the railway station. Presently, one USD is approximately 5.5 Finnish marks and one Euro is approximately 6 marks. Current exchange rates can be found at the www-address www.xe.net/ucc.

5.3 Arrival by air

Most people arriving from abroad will fly to Helsinki. There are the following possiblities to continue to the center of Helsinki from the airport.

Bus. There is a bus starting from the terminal door taking passengers to the railway station. Cost 25 marks.

Airport taxi. These are small yellow buses which take 6-8 persons and carry each person to his or her address. Cost around 70 marks each person. Order at desks situated near terminal doors when leaving the terminal.

Taxi. Taxis are available near the terminals. The cost from the airport to the city center is approximately 150 marks.

6. Accommodation

We have reserved a number of hotel rooms for the participants of the Colloquium. If these hotels do not meet your wishes, you may inquire about the availability of other hotels from the Congress Team.

Please note that during Summer 2000 there will be many conferences and cultural events in Helsinki, and hotels may be crowded. Therefore you should register as soon as possible and give more than one alternative for the hotel.

The following hotels are available. If you call or fax from abroad, add Int. + 358 9 before the number. All hotels except Hostel Academica and Eurohostel are on the map 1.
